A lot of conflicting info in the AP story, but apparently this stretch was almost 300' above the ground. I’m no engineer, but that’s pretty scary in high winds (this appeared to be a viaduct supported from below, not a suspension bridge...or maybe a hybrid design?)

What surprised me is that it was built in the 1960s and was renovated in 2016.

You can even play with the timeline in google maps as the google maps car has driven past that bridge almost 10 times in a decade time.

TIL there’s a timeline in Google Maps, thanks
. For years I’ve played the game “How many different places can I find my car around town?
” :D

There’s a suspension bridge portion and a viaduct portion. It looks like the last pier of the suspension portion collapsed. The suspension portion is prestressed concrete rather than cables, which is a bit different, and may/may not have something to do with the incident.
The roadway is 148ft above the ground, which is lower than the deck on the George Washington Bridge in NYC. The piers are 300ft tall.

The timeline feature
is very neat, TIL
. The article was updated, apparently they were still renovating the bridge. It is still frightening a whole tower collapsed. I am wondering if the lightning
fractured
the rebar and/
or
concrete or a tension wire. I am guessing lightning struck exposed rebar which then got really hot and expanded and damaged the concrete, then the crumbling happened.

I hate when my biggest fears come true...
